Blooms for Sunday!!

I woke up this morning to be greeted by my Clematis climbers in bloom. Aren't they pretty? There was nothing yesterday; only a lot of green leaves and buds. Today, many of the buds popped. Isn't nature a miracle?

Plans for Sunday

Inspired by my flowers, I've decided to spend the day watercolor painting. A few weeks ago, I purchased a book on watercolor florals. It's called Modern Watercolor Botanicals, by Sarah Simon. Though I have used watercolors before, it's been years since I last did any real work. I thought this book looked like a good place to start. The book itself is gorgeous and the lessons look beautifully written and easy to understand. I'll will post my progress from time to time.

It's Day 13 and the block is Double X. This block has acquired quite a few names over the years. I discovered this block in the 1970's and then it was called Old Maid's Puzzle. Another frequent name I see assigned to it is Goose and Goslings. The earliest referenced name discovered by Jinny Beyer is Double X. Here are a few more from her research*:

Double X – Farm and Fireside, February 15, 1893
Double X No. 2 – Ladies Art Company, 1897
Crosses and Losses, Finley, 1929
Goose and Goslings – Grandmother Clark's Patchwork Quilt Designs, From Books 20, 21, 23, 1932
Old Maid's Puzzle – Hinson, 1973
Fox and Goose – Marsha McCloskey's Block Party, McCloskey, 1993
