It's an Inside Day, Again

Looks like we’re getting some rain soon. I wasn't planning any long arm quilting today anyway. I finished Heartland Express yesterday and prepared the backing, so it's been added to the long arm backlog. Next, I've decided to start sub-cutting strips for the Inventory quilt.

Inventory Quilt

I've decided to name this quilt Off Center Log Cabin Scrappy. The name may change but that's what I'm calling it for now. I haven't written a pattern for this one, yet. My preparation process for making a scrappy quilt like an Inventory Quilt goes something like this:

For this quilt, I selected a gold print from my stash for the center squares of each log cabin block. This way all the centers are the same and it adds some cohesiveness to the quilt. When I'm ready to start sewing the blocks, I pull the necessary pieces for each block from each bag.

  1. Create a layout and cutting instructions
  2. Set up lunch bags with each piece length and number of pieces needed
  3. Cut strips of each print/solid I plan to use in the quilt
  4. Sub-cut the strips for each needed part

The important thing is that I don't select the colors or prints. It is all random. Whatever I pull from the bag is what I use in that block. No judgements. Sometimes the combination looks planned, but my favorites are always the ones that I step back from and say "I love that and I never would have thought to deliberately combine those colors or patterns."

Simply pulling from the bags eliminates the need to try and match colors or distribute colors across the quilt. I used this method to make Nine By Nine (see yesterday's post). The randomness naturally distributes the color without even trying.

#The100DayProjectMysteryQuilt

It's day 68 of The 100 Day Project Mystery Quilt - Block 68 is Corn and Beans. This is a 6" block.

Corn and Beans – This block combines half-square triangles with flying geese units to create a versatile block for color play. This is a great block for beginning quilters. It makes a beautiful three color quilt. Or, make it scrappy by using your inventory!
