It's Tuesday – Long Arm Day!

Part of my plan to get more things done includes dedicating certain days to certain activities. Not that it is the only thing I do that day, but that I make sure I do something on that activity that day. It helps keep the project or activity moving forward.

Selecting Quilting Designs

Right now, I don't have anything mounted on the long arm. I had the pictured quilt mounted just as the whole COVID-19 thing blew up and I ended up taking it off so I could make masks. Today I'll start with this quilt. It is a beautiful half-square quilt in pinks and browns made by my friend Helen.

A frequent question is "How do you decided what quilt pattern to use?" Sometimes the customer has a clear idea of what they want. In that case, I locate the specific pattern or find something that closely matches the desired design.

When a customer is not sure what quilt design to use, we will discuss a few ideas. I like to take cues from the fabrics used as well as the overall design of the quilt. This quilt contains more traditional prints and is reminiscent of the late 19th century. I suggested a few designs and Helen liked a traditional Baptist fan design. I think it will complement the quilt well and show off Helen's beautiful piecing.

#The100DayProjectMysteryQuilt

It's Day 8 and the block is Free Trade. Free Trade is a star block with a four patch center. The center of the block contains two squares and two half squares. A variety of looks are possible by changing the color placement.

I made the first seven blocks in browns, reds and pinks. I plan to make the next seven blocks using various teals, browns and green-blues.

I spent some time playing with a few ideas. I like the flexibility of this block design and can see a full quilt of blocks with or without sashing. It is also a nice block for showing off some of your stash fabrics.

Here are a few options:

I'll also spend some time working on the next block for the mystery.

Until next time,
