Techniques to Try
One technique I've been wanting to try for some time is Walking Foot Quilting. It's on my quilting bucket list for 2020.
Walking foot quilting is a little different then working with a free-motion quilting foot. The free-motion quilting foot does not press or hold the fabric sandwich. Additionally, the feed dogs on the machine are dropped. Both the foot and the dropped feed dogs allow the fabric to move freely in any direction. You control the direction and distance the quilt sandwich moves.
Using the Walking foot when quilting brings some control to the process. The feed dogs on the machine are engaged and the walking foot also has feed dogs. This allows the fabric to be feed more evenly from the top and bottom of the quilt sandwich.
When I think of free motion quilting, I tend to think of curves and feathers. When I think of walking foot quilting, I think of straight lines. That isn't entirely correct. It is possible to accomplish straight line quilting while using free motion techniques and you can achieve curved designs with a walking foot.
