Weekend is Here
I still love my weekends. I think after 40 years of working, it's kind of became a habit to look forward to Saturdays and Sundays. They just feel a little different.
We've been getting a lot of rain here lately and I have an open window of sunshine today, so I'll be in the garden planting and weeding. I have a small spot near the front walk that can use a little color. The climbers I planted by the trellis in the front last year didn't survive the winter. The ones in the back did survive, so that was good. The back ones are a hardier variety, so I bought the same kind for the front this year.
Kona bought a hydrangea for me for Mother's Day and I purchased two more for the back. Plus, I bought some lavender for an empty spot where another plant died last year. I'll be busy for a while.

It's day 26 and today's block is Kansas Troubles. This block is named for an exceedingly difficult time in Kansas history. Between 1854 and 1861, the legality of slavery in the Kansas Territory was hotly contested. A series of violent confrontations between the anti-slavery "Free-Staters" and the pro-slavery "Border Ruffians" gave rise to the territory's nick name, Bleeding Kansas. This block is named for the troubles of Kansas at that time.
This block has appeared with a few other names:
Kansas Troubles – Ladies Art Company, 1897
Kansas Trouble – Kansas City Star, 1934
Lucasta's Block – Nancy Page, Birmingham News, February 27, 1940
Grand Right and Left – Farm Journal and Farmer's Wife, ca. 1941
