Happy 4th of July!

It's muggy and humid here today. I think that's typical for July in Missouri. I'm just hanging out here at home today.

Patriotic Quilts

Today I'm working on a few patriotic quilts using the Home Town Hero pattern. Not sure what I will do with them when I'm done. I'm thinking of sending them to some veterans among my family and friends.

#The100DayProjectMysteryQuilt

It's day 75 of The 100 Day Project Mystery Quilt - Block 75 is Clay's Choice. This is a 6" block.

Though the oldest name found for this block is "Shooting Star", it is probably best known as "Clay's Choice".

From the Chicago Tribune, 1933:
"Henry Clay's Efforts to Maintain Union Inspired Interesting Quilt Keenly alive to the social distress of the 1800s, woman of that day wove into their quilt patterns stories of unrest.

'This department today offers another design 'Clay's Choice,' in the historical quilt series. About 1832 there was a considerable agitation in the south for disunion. Proposals to admit California, a free state, to the Union were met with violent protest, because it meant the upsetting of equality in the number of slave and free states. Other differences included the problems of slavery in the territory of New Mexico and Utah, the Texas boundary, slave trade between the states, and northern refusal of cooperation in returning fugitive slaves. Henry Clay, in an effort to maintain the Union, offered a compromise bill designed to soothe both sections. It provided for payment of $10,000 to Texas for relinquishing claims to New Mexico; admission of California as a free state; making states of New Mexico and Utah with no provision as to slavery; abolition of slave trade in the District of Columbia, and efficient fugitive slave laws for the south. 'Clay's Choice' represents this move toward pacification. Other names for this quilt are 'Henry's Star' and 'Star of the West.'" Nancy Cabot, Chicago Tribune, April 5, 1933
